In 1993–1994, an open international architectural competition was held for getting the best solution for the building of the Art Museum of Estonia. The winner was the Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori. Constructions of the building started in 2002. The new museum was named Kumu Art Museum and it was opened to the visitors in February 2006
