Political and Poetical

The organisers of the 14th Tallinn Print Triennal invite artists to address two themes: Political and Poetical, that may at first seem mutually antagonistic, but which are important (or essential) aspects of the graphic arts. Throughout their history the graphic arts have been employed in both the social/political and the personal/poetic spheres. They have offered the mechanism for the mass promotion of political ideas and created conditions in which personal and liberal self-expression can flourish.

But are these themes mutually exclusive? Can the political be poetic and visa versa? And if these barriers can be crossed, what are the consequences of intermingling their themes? Is print-based political propaganda a form of romantic self-deception, microscopic resistance, serious political engagement, poetic self-expression or all of these rolled together? What is the impact of a poetically-clad political message? What new tricks can the art of printing bring to the enduring themes of politics and poetry?
